Constructed Value


(Wearable) ObjectMateial: Iron wire, diamond

	
This piece examines the perceived value of diamonds and the underlying forces that shape it. Diamonds are widely recognized as a staple in the jewelry industry, where they are meticulously cut, set into precious metals, and sold at premium prices. As a result, diamonds have become unattainable luxuries for many due to their high cost.

However, few people are aware that the iconic status of diamonds is largely a construct of the market. The diamond supply is tightly controlled, and the industry manipulates sales volumes to maintain high prices. The value of each diamond is determined by a rigorous evaluation process based on the "4 Cs" (carat, cut, color, and clarity), further enhancing their exclusivity. To solidify diamonds as symbols of love and commitment, the industry has also crafted elaborate myths and romantic narratives.


In my work, I draw a parallel between the process of valuing diamonds and the construction of a house. Here, diamonds are metaphorically placed within a stable and secure wire cage, representing the artificially inflated value imposed by market forces. This construction process symbolizes society's relentless pursuit of increasing diamond value and the often irrational measures taken to achieve this goal.

	Gold Leaves,&#38;nbsp; Gold Lives.

	Gold as a natural material exists much longer than human
history. As the moment the ancestors found it, they were attracted by the
sun-like color and practical advantages. Gold has been pursued and cherished by
generations and generations for thousands of years.


However, one can only own gold for a while in her/his
limited life. On the contrary, Gold which was once belonged to someone can
always exist in different forms. Gold is the witness of every being,
documenting the history and showing the imprint of lives.


I choose to apply the gold foil onto the faded plant’s
surface. The gold foil can easily follow the shape and show the detailed
texture due to its thinness. By doing so, as time goes by, the gold foil can
keep the form of plants when inside is decayed. Gold act as a document material

FADING

	Ever since I came into this world, my connection with Chongqing has steadily grown. In 1997, Chongqing was granted the prestigious title of the fourth municipality in China, marking a significant milestone for the city. Chongqing has since undergone remarkable transformations.&#38;nbsp;
There is a popular saying that growth is a constant process, yet it sometimes comes at the cost of losing something precious. As our city experiences rapid expansion, towering skyscrapers now surround many old houses. The landscape is continuously evolving as new developments take shape. 
However, old residential areas, which hold countless memories and represent a bygone era are gradually being dismantled. This realization fuels my desire to make work with collected furniture in the old building and replace the part with glass to freeze the fading beauty of old Chongqing before it vanishes completely.
